Cate jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the first round and held off San Marcos 11-7 in a non-league boys tennis match on Friday in Carpinteria.
It was the Rams’ first victory over a CIF Division 1 school.
San Marcos freshman Kento Perera was dominant in his three sets, winning 6-1, 6-0, 6-0.
But Cate’s singles players picked up five wins, with Kevin Ha and Jason Xiao claiming two sets apiece and Johnowen Lowe picking up the other win in a tough 6-4 match.
In doubles, Michael Revord and Jack Hoover of the Rams wer perfect on the day, winning 6-2, 6-2, 6-3. Brendan Lokre teamed with Christian Herman to secure two points, while Edward Cho worked with Shuta Kobayashi to secure a 6-2 win.
Cate is 2-3 on the season and San Marcos is 5-4.
