Bishop Diego lost by one game in its non-league boys tennis match against Orcutt Academy on Monday at the Municipal Courts. Orcutt won 69-68 after the teams tied 9-9 in sets.
“This was the closest match I’ve ever seen, losing by only one game after a 9-9 tie,” Bishop coach Debbie Ekola said. “Matt Hammond played his heart out to win the last match for the tie. Unfortunately it is was not enough for the team win.
Hammond was involved in two close sets. First, he fought back from four set points and beat Orcutt’s Dominic Mariscal 7-5 and then outlasted Logan Serda, 7-5 to knot the team score at 9-9.
Spencer Ekola continued to dominate in singles, sweeping his three sets to improve to 27-0 for the season.
Dylan Pierz and Jose Pacheco went 2-1 in doubles and improved to 18-3 overall.
Bishop is 3-6 on the season.
