Lisa Adkins, who brought home a gold medal in the women’s shot put at a track and field meet last weekend in Santa Maria, was honored as the Special Olympics Athlete of the Month at Monday’s Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table press luncheon.
Adkins competed in four events at the meet. Besides winning the shot put, she placed in the 50- and 100-meter runs and the softball throw.
“She’s a real pleasure to coach,” said her coach Jerry Siegel. “She’s a great teammate.”
Siegel noted that for the relays Santa Barbara trained nine runners and all nine attended the meet. That meant someone wouldn’t be able to run.
“We asked for volunteers and Lisa was the first one to raise her hand. And this is after she trained for it,” Siegel said. “I don’t know if I would have done that, but that’s typical of the kind of person she is.”
Adkins has been involved in Special Olympics for the last two years. She said she enjoys it for the exercise, the fun and the opportunity to meet people.
The next track meet for Adkins and the Santa Barbara team is on May 2 in San Luis Obispo.
