TRK: Shoe snafu doesn’t stop SBCC’s Santella

Scott Santella overcame a shoe snafu to help SBCC take second place on Friday in the WSC Coastal men’s track and field meet at Cuesta College.

Santella, a sophomore from Carpinteria High, had to use borrowed shoes after leaving his throwing pair and jumping pair in Santa Barbara. He placed first in the javelin (45.35 meters) and high jump (1.83m).

Alex Heuchert won the 800 in a personal-best 1:59.19, Kyle O’Hollaren took the pole vault (4.35m) and Bas van Leersum won the 400 hurdles (54.76).

Hancock won the five-team competition with 174.3 points. The Vaqueros totaled 144 to edge out Ventura (141.6) for second. Santa Monica was fourth at 111 and Cuesta (102) took fifth.

Michael Orosco posted a pair of seconds (shot put, 12.02m; discus, 36.28m) and a third in the hammer. Phillip Skopnick was third in the shot put and fourth in the hammer.

“The men got after it and competed hard with a very strong Hancock program,” said coach Scott Fickerson. “We were outgunned but our men had a lot of strong marks and are rounding into shape for the WSC Championships. Second place is a good result for us.”

The Vaqueros will compete in the Orange Coast Classic on Friday in Costa Mesa
