Abel Gonzalez and Zara Brillo-Sonnino produced top results for Bishop Deigo’s track & field team at a Frontier League meet at Santa Paula.
Gonzalez recorded fourth-place finishes in three events as Cardinals head coach Veronica Gines had each athlete compete in four events. More Cardinals were competing at the JV level than varsity.
“I am very proud of our athletes, especially because they are such a young team,” Gines said. “We only have two seniors, two competing Juniors, and the rest are Freshman and Sophomores. After training through this meet and giving every runner and jumper a full schedule with 4 events each, I just wanted to see my athletes’ give their all in their events which they did. I look forward to the weeks ahead because we are only going to get better with our experience and practice.”
Brillo-Sonnino, a freshman, won the 100 and 200-meter sprints in times that would have won the varsity races. She won the 100 in 13.42 and the 200 in 28.6.
