San Marcos’ boys tennis team enjoyed a quality day up in Arroyo Grande on Friday, defeating the defending CIF D3 champions 14-4.
The Royals won five of six sets in each of the first two rounds to clinch the match before the third round.
“I thought we played our most complete match today,” reported Royals head coach Jarrod Bradley. “We came out focused, positive and energetic. Our guys were cheering for each other and since we didn’t have any fans with us, that was a big difference for us.”
San Marcos won 7-of-9 singles sets, led by Kento Perera’s 6-0, 6-0, 6-0 results. The Royals top two doubles teams both swept as well.
“Our number one and two doubles teams were on today. They were aggressive at the net, returned alleys well and hit a high percentage of their first serves in,” Bradley shared.
Owen Lincoln and Travis Smelley won 6-0, 6-2, 6-3 while Matthew Lockwood and Daniel Coulson swept 6-1, 6-2, 6-2. Another doubles highlight was the comeback from Oliver Piltch and Christo Anderson. The pair fell behind 0-4 before rallying for the 6-4 win in the second round.
“Christo and Oliver played some of the best tennis of the year for us in those six games,” Bradley said. “We just have to figure out how to play that way every set.”
San Marcos (4-2) plays again on Tuesday at Dos Pueblos.
