San Marcos’ softball team fell to Pioneer Valley 9-2 and Santa Paula 8-5 on Saturday at the Santa Ynez Tournament.
The Royals had an early 8 a.m. game against Pioneer Valley and had a tough time getting going. San Marcos scored two runs in the fourth inning but had already given up the nine runs and the game was shortened on a tournament mercy-rule.
The Royals offense did better in the second game but the defense – which allowed four unearned runs in the first game – gave up another seven unearned. The offense did its job by outhitting the Cardinals 10-8 with six extra-base hits. Responsible for the six doubles were Stephanie Swann (2), Hailee Rios (2), Sandra Trujillo and Veronica Villarreal.
For the day, Rios was 4 for 5, Swann was 3 for 5 and Cara Christian was 2 for 5.
San Marcos next hosts Buena on Tuesday.
