Fullerton – In their first two Big West conference games of the season, UC Santa Barbara (21-11) split their doubleheader against Cal State Fullerton (20-13-1), winning the first game 6-1 and falling in the second 10-0 in five innings.
In the first game of the day, Shelby Wisdom led the way with yet another dominant pitching performance, allowing just one run in her eleventh complete game of the season. Wisdom only allowed three hits while striking out four Titans batters.
Wisdom had a fantastic performance with the bat as well, hitting a double and a home run while collecting three RBI.
After falling behind 1-0 in the first, the Gauchos tied it up in the top of the third inning with Wisdom’s double to right center, scoring Kristen Clark from second.
The score remained nodded up until Emily Brucelas hit a two out two run homer to left center in the top of the sixth, giving UCSB the lead for good.
In the seventh, Wisdom provided herself with some insurance with her two run bomb. Lauren Boser followed with a solo shot to left, giving the Gauchos three home runs on the day and a comfortable lead to finish off the game with.
In the second game, the outcome was basically decided in the bottom of the first inning, as Fullerton piled on seven runs before the Gauchos could record the third out. The Titans added on three more runs in the third with a three run homer, making the deficit ten.
The Gauchos were unable to push any runs across, finishing with just three hits in the mercy rule shortened five innings.
The Gauchos will try to take the series on Sunday, taking the field once again with the Titans at 12:00 p.m. in Fullerton.
