In battle of perennial softball powers, Dos Pueblos pulled out a 1-0 win over Camarillo in a season-opening game on Wednesday.
Ady Willett scored the only run in the third inning. She bunted for a hit, moved to second on a sacrifice by Jade Sinskul, stole third base and came home on a slap hit by Madison Buie.
“We were able to generate a run with team work,” DP coach Jon Uyesaka said. “Starting with Ady’s speed and knowledge of the game, she led off the third inning with an excellent drag bunt, noting the third base player was a little deep. Jade came through with the sacrifice. Ady recognized the third basemen playing up for the bunt against left slapper Madison Buie, so she stole third, beating the shortstop to the bag. The next pitch Mady laid down a nice slap hit, scoring Ady for the only run in the game.”
Lani Evans pitched a complete-game, two-hitter. She struck out six, walked eight and pitched out of bases-loaded jams in the second and third innings.
“Camarillo is alway a very tough team. It is a little nerve-racking playing them on our first outing, but you know where you stand early in the season,” Uyesaka said. “To come away with a win like that, is huge for us. Lani showed toughness in the circle throughout the game.”
