PBB: Santa Ynez gets to Warriors twice

Carpinteria’s baseball team suffered a pair of losses in a season-opening double-header on Saturday as the Warriors fell to visiting Santa Ynez 9-5 and 7-1.

The Warriors started out with a bang, scoring five runs in their first at bat of the season, but went quiet after that and scored just one run over the next 13 frames.

With Mo Sanchez on the mound, Carpinteria held its 5-1 lead in the first game until surrendering seven unearned runs in the sixth inning. Santa Ynez’s Noah Padilla picked up the victory after entering the game in the second inning and holding the Warriors to one hit in five innings.

Santa Ynez is now 4-0 to start its season. The Pirates are ranked No. 6 in the pre-season Division-5 poll.  The Warriors are No. 10 in Division 6.

“The Pirates seem to be a machine that is already firing on all cylinders,” reported Warriors head coach Pat Cooney. “Coach Dickey has them playing with confidence and they apply pressure throughout. The Warriors are still looking for the keys. Once we get our motor running, I think we’ll catch up to speed.”

Kevin Stein and Sanchez led the Carpinteria offense with two hits apiece on the day. Connor Kelsey recorded a two-run single in the first game.

All seven of Santa Ynez’s runs were earned in the second game as Carpinteria managed only two hits.

The Warriors (0-2) face Dunn on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m.
