Carpinteria pitchers Diego Contreras and David Martinez combined for 12 strikeouts and gave up only three hits as the Warriors blanked Thacher 9-0 in a non-league baseball game on Saturday.
The left-handed Contreras, a sophomore, picked up the win as he struck out six and walked one while scattering three hits. Martinez, a right-handed freshman, entered the game and tossed six strikeouts of his own while walking none and surrendering just two hits.
Carpinteria hitters took advantage of Thacher’s wildness on the mound. The Toads walked eight and three Warriors were hit by the pitch.
Carpinteria (2-4) scored five times on wild pitches. Isaiah Sosa had two hits off the bench while first baseman Connor Kelsey had a hit and scored three runs. Also off the bench, Malcolm Gordon had a two-RBI hit in a four-run fourth inning.
“It was important live action for both the pitchers and the hitters,” Carpinteria coach Pat Cooney said. “Hopefully, the one-sided games build confidence for the upcoming pressure-packed games. To date, we have either been dominated or dominant, and we are looking forward to some classic 5-4 games against like opponents.”
