Outstanding pitching and an opportunistic offense equaled a victory for the Santa Barbara High baseball team on Thursday.
Sophomore Kevin Gowdy turned in a solid performance in his varsity debut and the Dons scored six unearned runs to beat Arroyo Grande, 7-1, in the home opener. The game was part of the Central Coast Tournament.
“He pitched a really good game,” Santa Barbara assistant coach Mike Cooney said of the right-handed Gowdy. “He was very poised and had a terrific fastball-curveball combination.”
Gowdy allowed six hits, struck out eight and walked one.
Santa Barbara had only four hits but capitalized on six Arroyo Grande errors to win their second game.
Bryce Morison had a two-out RBI double in the second inning to get the Dons on the scoreboard.
Santa Barbara plays at Righetti on Tuesday.
