Sophomore Kevin Gowdy fired a no-hitter, leading Santa Barbara to a 2-0 win over Pine Creek, Colo., in the consolation game of the Coach Bob Invitational National Division.
Gowdy faced three batters of the minimum. He struck out nine, walked none, hit two batters and allowed a runner on a seventh-inning infield error.
“Kevin was masterful, effective with three pitches, and our defense made several exceptional plays to preserve the no hitter,” Santa Barbara assistant Mike Cooney said. “The long drive home will be much more enjoyable.”
The Dons broke a scoreless game in the fifth inning. Ian True led off with a double off the center-field fence, Dalton Schroeder followed with a drag bunt single, and a wild pitch scored True. A perfect squeeze bunt by Tim Stickles scored Schroeder with the second run.
The Dons finished the tournament with 3 wins and 2 losses, improving to 9-3 on the season.
