David Martinez blasted a three-run homer in the sixth inning, and Carpinteria played solid defensively in beating Santa Paula, 10-3, in a non-league baseball game on Wednesday.
The Warriors committed just one error to help senior right-handers Mo Sanchez and Duncan Gordon. Sanchez picked up his second win of 2014 and Gordon featured the knuckleball which stymied the Cardinal batters. Wind and cells of rain clouds rolled through John Calderwood Field but the Warriors were solid on defense.
Javier Jasso, Kevin Stein, and Salvador Delgado each had two hits for Carpinteria (3-4)
“Every victory is important,” Carpinteria coach Pat Cooney said. “We are trying to win at bats, situations and innings on offense and still settling in on defense. Our pitchers looked poised and confident the entire game. Trust is building among the players.”
Cooney noted that the game was a non-league game against a league opponent.
“It was important to set the tone for things to come when we face the Cards down the road,” Cooney said.
