The “D Boys” came through for SBCC on Friday night in a 25-18, 25-22, 25-20 men’s volleyball sweep of L.A. Trade Tech at the Sports Pavilion.
Kiel DeTurk had 12 kills and hit .350 while Shane Dyer recorded a double-double with 10 kills, 10 digs and a .304 hitting percentage.
“I’ve been trying hard the past couple of weeks to get out there and play,” said DeTurk, a 6-4 freshman opposite from Yucaipa, Calif. “I’m glad I got the opportunity.”
Davis Grininger added six kills and Carl Mendoza dug 15 balls.
It was the first Western State Conference win for the Vaqueros (6-4, 1-2). Trade Tech, a first-year program, fell to 1-10 and 0-4.
A kill and an ace serve by Dyer ignited a 6-0 run in the first set that gave Santa Barbara a 17-10 lead. The Beavers closed with three at 20-17 before Evan Yoshimoto pounded two kills and Dyer add two more to cap the 25-18 win.
DeTurk entered the match to start the second set and had two kills as the Vaqueros built an 8-4 lead. Setter Drew Hogan (18 assists) went down with an injury and Corey McDown proved to be a capable replacement. McDown notched an ace on his first swing of the match and finished with 18 assists.
“Corey and I have a good connection because we’re on the team that practices against Drew and the other opposites,” noted DeTurk.
The Vaqueros stretched the lead to 20-14 in the second set on putaways by Nick May and DeTurk. Trade Tech went on an 8-2 run to tie it at 22 before Junior Too pounded a kill in the middle, Tech hit a ball long and Wyatt Garley served an ace to complete the 25-22 triumph.
“Shane did a nice job for us, he was really steady,” said coach Matt Jones. “The middles continue to play really well and they’re closing out blocks. Kiel came in and did a nice job. He took some good swings, hit open spots on the court and played good defense.”
The Vaqueros held small leads throughout the third set. DeTurk had seven kills, including one off the block that gave SBCC a 22-17 advantage. The Vaqueros last three points came on a backrow kill by DeTurk, a kill by Owen Yoshimoto and a hit that sailed long by the Beavers.
The Vaqueros will host El Camino on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
