Santa Barbara High sophomore Amber Melgoza came up big in a CIF championship basketball game, leading the Dons to their first title in program history.
Senior Shane Hauschild took charge for the San Marcos boys volleyball team, carrying it to the title in a strong Redondo Tournament.
Their performances were recognized at Monday’s Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table press luncheon as they were named recipients of the Athlete of the Week award.
With her teammates getting her the ball, Melgoza made the plays, scoring 38 points in Santa Barbara’s 67-43 win over Lake Elsinore-Lakeside in the CIF-SS 3AA Division championship game on Saturday at Azusa Pacific University. She made 15 of 30 shots and grabbed nine rebounds.
Hauschild led a potent San Marcos attack, averaging 4.8 kills per set, to lead the Royals to the championship at the Redondo Tournament. He was named the tourney MVP. San Marcos beat Oak Park, Palos Verdes, South Pasadena and host Redondo in the final on Saturday.
The female honorable mention choices for were Elysia Hodges of Westmont track and field and Hailee Rios of the San Marcos softball team.
The other male candidates for the award were Wade Allen (UCSB swimming), Kevin Gowdy (Santa Barbara High baseball), Evan Licht (UCSB volleyball), Alan Williams (UCSB basketball) and Russell Harmening (Westmont baseball).
