SBCC freshman Felix Mory shot a 1-over-par 73 on Monday but Ventura and Canyons posted season lows in the fourth WSC men’s golf tournament at River Ridge GC in Oxnard.
Ventura claimed its first WSC meet title with an 8-over 358. Canyons was second at 362 and SBCC took third in the eight-team field at 385. Canyons leads the WSC season standings at 27-1. The Pirates (23-5) moved into second place, one game ahead of the Vaqueros (22-6).
There was a three-way tie for medalist honors at 3-under 69 between Remy Smaby (Ventura), Sidney Wolf (Canyons) and Aaron Grimes (Canyons). Alec Constantinides shot 77 for the Vaqueros and Blake McPherson and Carson Curtis tied at 78.
“We did not play well today but I don’t think it would have mattered the way Ventura and Canyons played,” said coach Chuck Melendez. “We haven’t played well the last couple of tournaments but we’ll keep working hard and hopefully, we’ll start competing the way we’re capable of.”
The Vaqueros will play in WSC No. 5 on Monday, March 24 at Antelope Valley CC in Palmdale.
