Westmont’s Russell Harmening pitched all nine innings on Saturday to lead Westmont’s baseball team to a 5-2 GSAC victory at No. 25 Vanguard in Costa Mesa.
Vanguard regrouped and won the second game of the double-header 9-1.
Harmening allowed five hits and two earned runs while striking out eight in the first game.
Vanguard got its two runs in the bottom of the second inning to take a 2-0 lead. The Warriors waited until the eighth inning to mount their comeback, scoring all five runs in the frame.
Graylin Derke led Westmont at the plate with three hits and an RBI.
In the second game, Vanguard’s Taylor McKnight drove home four runs and Brandon Sandoval scored three times with two hits in a game that was shortened to seven innings. Clayton Voechting was the winning pitcher for not allowing an earned run in seven innings.
Westmont was held to seven hits in the second game with David Gabel getting two of them.
The results make Westmont’s GSAC record 12-13 while Vanguard is to 15-9.
