Laguna Blanca pulled out a tight first set, and that sparked the Owls to a sweep over St. Joseph in a non-league boys volleyball match on Monday night. The scores were 30-28, 25-18, 25-17.
Stephen McCaffery had seven of his team-high 13 kills in the first set and served two aces. Colton Johnson had five kills and Andrew Vignolo added four and Ryan Bickett picked eight digs to start the match on a good note.
“I knew as a coach that a Monday game would be tough, especially after the SAT this weekend,” Laguna coach Dillan Bennett said. “But I also saw it as a nice challenge for our guys to step up and play good volleyball. St Joe’s played really good defense in the first set, which took our hitters a bit out of their rhythm, but we fixed a few things and got back on track for games two and three.”
Johnson finished the match with 11 kills, Vignolo had seven and Jack Copeland contributed six. Defensively, Bickett finished with 14 digs.
The Owls (2-0) play host to Arrowhead Christian on Friday.
