Dos Pueblos opened a new era for boys volleyball as Ehren Hug took over as coach, replacing longtime coach Chris Hughes, who stepped down after last season.
The Chargers stumbled in their first match for Hug, falling to a solid Newbury Park team, 25-15, 25-22, 25-10 at Sovine Gym.
“My hats off to the Panthers, who are very well coached, consistent volleyball team,” Hug said. “Their size, consistent quick attack and aggressive serving was too much for my boys.”
Hug has an inexperienced squad as 11 of the 14 players were making their varsity debuts.
Kurtis Randmaa notched four kills in the middle, Niko Plesons served three aces and Mark Raphael did a nice job spreading the ball around in his debut at setter, Hug said.
“I am extremely proud of how hard my boys played until the final point against a team in Newbury Park that has an excellent season ahead of them,” said Hug.
Dos Pueblos plays at Westlake on Wednesday.
