Carpinteria won the first two sets at Malibu but couldn’t close out the match and suffered a 18-25, 17-25, 28-26, 25-17, 15-11 defeat against the Sharks in a Tri-Valley League match Thursday.
Mason Picerni had 11 kills and three blocks to lead Carpinteria (0-2, 0-2), while Giovanni Rodriquez added eight kills. Setter Jesus Ortega handed out a personal best 31 assists.
Coach Marc Denitz also cited the passing and digging of Victor Garcia and Eduardo Tofoya.
Carpinteria plays in the Laguna Blanca tournament on Saturday.
