Carpinteria won the close sets and pulled away from Pacifica in the final round of play for a 13-5 non-league tennis victory on Thursday.
“The match was much closer than the score indicated,” Carpinteria coach Charles Bryant said. “We were tied 3-3 after the first round and it was 5-5 midway through the second round with a couple of close sets still being played.
“We did a great job of closing out those sets and that momentum carried us through
the rest of the tightly contested match.”
Jonathan Cleek won his three sets and No. 3 singles and the No. 2 doubles team of Ricky Zermeno and Collin Nathanson also went 3-0.
The No. 1 team of Sean Welty/Sam Gutierrez recovered from a slow start and won a key tiebreak in the second round to help the Warriors (5-3) pull away.
“We have played two solid matches in a row and the boys are very excited,” said Bryant. “League starts next week and the teams will be much more disciplined and experienced than what we have been facing, so we will have to continue to improve.”
