San Marcos freshman Kento Perera remained undefeated in singles, but Valencia won five doubles sets and five singles sets to hold off the Royals, 10-8, in a non-league boys tennis match on Monday.
“Kento beat a hard-hitting (Valencia No. 1 player) Chad LeDuff with penetrating groundstrokes and amazing consistency,” San Marcos coach Jarrod Bradley said. “Kento made few errors and eliciting many from his opponent.”
Perera won his sets 6-0, 6-3, 6-0 to improve to 8-0.
In doubles, Owen Lincoln and Travis Smelley also improved to 8-0. The Royals won one other doubles set.
“We didn’t come out ready to play in doubles today despite a 35-minute warm up, and Valencia took a 4-2 lead early,” Bradley said. “We made numerous unforced errors and that hurt us just like we did last week at Santa Ynez. We have two more matches this week and I’m looking forward to seeing us come out stronger from the beginning ”
San Marcos is 2-1 while Valencia improves to 2-0.
