BTen: Owls fall short in first match on new courts

Laguna Blanca played on its new on-campus tennis courts for the first time on Monday. Unfortunately for the Owls, they fell short on games after a 9-9 tie with Malibu.

The Sharks won on games, 74-69.

After losing to Malibu 15-3 last year (one of only two teams that beat us last season), we came agonizingly close to the win today,” Laguna coach Trevor Thorpe said. “I was, however, very impressed with the way we came out and competed, still short-handed a few key starters after losing to San Marcos High 14-4 on Thursday.

Ben Furukawa and Phillip Hicks both went 3-0 in their singles sets, and the Owls No. 1 doubles team of Henry Farrell and Martin Barnick won two sets despite never having played together.

Thorpe said the team hadn’t even practiced on the new courts before Monday’s match. “…So you can’t even really say we had a home-court advantage today.”

Laguna Blanca returns to its courts on Wednesday against Besant Hill in its first Condor League match.
