Carpinteria won eight of nine doubles sets and defeated Bishop Diego 11-7 in a non-league boys tennis match on Tuesday.
“This was a tight, well-fought match by both teams,” Carpinteria coach Charles Bryant said. “We were able to squeak it out in the end, winning the last three sets. We put a little more weight in our doubles and I was very pleased with how they performed.”
The Warriors’ No. 1 team of Bryan Taira/Collin Nathanson and the No. 2 duo of Ricky
Zermeno/Ruben Andrade both went 3-0. Jonathan Cleek/Sam Truax went 2-1 on the day and almost pulled out the sweep, losing a tough 7-5 set against Bishop’s No. 1 team.
“It was clear today that our doubles teams needs more match experience,” Bishop coach Debbie Ekola said. “We will be working hard in the coming weeks to beef up our doubles skills”
Ben Murray went 2-1 in singles for the Warriors (3-0).
Spencer Ekola, the defending Frontier League champion, went 3-0 and didn’t drop a game in singles for Bishop Diego.
