Westmont’s Kelsie Sampson was named the Golden State Athletic Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Week on Monday. The 6-1 senior forward averaged 25.1 points and 10.0 rebounds in two games last week.
At Concordia on Tuesday night, Sampson made 12 of 26 shots from the field and 10 of 11 from the free throw line to score 34 points. The impressive total was the second highest single-game tally in her career and the fifth most points scored in a single game by any Warrior. Sampson also pulled down 13 rebounds in the game and dished off three assists.
On Saturday night, Sampson scored 17 points and pulled down seven rebounds against San Diego Christian in front of a home crowd. She also pilfered the ball three times.
Through the first 21 games of the season, Sampson has scored no less than 12 points in any game while averaging 20.3 per game. Her rebound average of 8.1 boards per game leads the Warriors. She has also compiled 31 blocks on the season.
With 427 points this season and six games remaining in the regular season, she is on pace to take over third place in the Warrior record book for points scored in a single season. Sampson’s 1,103 career points ranks 11th in the Warrior annals. She is already the Warrior record holder for career blocks at 106.
Sampson and the #11 Warriors (15-6, 6-2 GSAC) are currently in a three-way tie for second place in the GSAC standings, two games behind top-ranked Vanguard, who remains undefeated at 19-0 overall and 8-0 in conference play. Westmont will travel to Costa Mesa on Tuesday to take on the Lions on their home court. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
