SBCC shot a season-best 50 percent on Wednesday but still came up short, 91-87, in a wild back-and-forth women’s basketball game at Canyons.
The Vaqueros (9-12, 1-6) trailed 46-37 at the half and 50-39 early in the second half. Then they went on a 20-7 run, capped by a three-point play by Mhiah Vickers that put them on top, 59-57, with 15:17 to play.
Vickers scored 15 of her 22 points in the second half. Elia Salazar and Andrea Morales had 12 points each. Keiona Mathews, the WSC’s top scorer, tallied 25 for Canyons (11-12, 5-3) and Shawn Kolani added 19 points and 10 assists.
The Cougars hit 52 percent from the field and enjoyed a plus-16 advantage in free throws, making 34-of-40 compared to 18-28 for the Vaqueros. There were 10 ties and 16 lead changes in the contest.
“It was a great game with four lead changes in the last two minutes,” said SBCC coach Sandrine Krul. “It was like a playoff game.”
Tatum Maciel gave the Vaqueros their last lead on a layup that made it 83-82 with 2:09 to play. Another layup by Maciel tied it at 85 but Canyons closed on a 6-2 run with Kolani going 6-6 from the charity stripe.
The Vaqueros will host Moorpark on Saturday at 5 p.m.
