Two-time CIF State shot put champion Stamatia Scarvelis is starting her senior season at Dos Pueblos on fire.
Scarvelis threw a personal best of 53-08.25 to win the girls shot put at the Simplot Games in Pocatello, Idaho on Saturday. The mark is the best in the nation and the fourth-best all time.
The national high school record is 54-10.75 and the state record is 54-04.75.
The Simplot Games is touted as North America’s premier high school indoor track and field meet.
Scarvelis got good competition from Ashlie Blake of Liberty High in Nevada. She finished second at 52-03.50.
Scarvelis has twice this winter set new personal best marks. Last month at an All-Comers meet at Westmont College, she threw 52-04.50, which passed her previous record of 52-1.75, which was her winning mark at the USA Junior Nationals last summer.
Scarvelis recently signed a National Letter of Intent with UCLA.
