SBCC stormed back from a 2-0 deficit to beat Irvine Valley 3-2 on Wednesday night in a men’s volleyball match at Irvine. The scores were 23-25, 24-26, 25-22, 25-22, 15-12.
Evan Yoshimoto led the Vaqueros (2-0) with 21 kills, 11 digs and six blocks. His brother, Owen Yoshimoto, added 13 kills and a team-high 19 digs. Carl Mendoza had 17 digs, Jack Shields delivered four aces and Drew Hogan handed out 45 assists.
“We gave up a lot of points on serve receive errors in the first set,” said coach Matt Jones. “We got a little better in the second one. In the last three sets, we limited our errors and played great defense.”
SBCC overcame a 7-3 deficit in the fifth set with a 6-0 run, capped by a kill from Evan Yoshimoto and a block by Yoshimoto and Davis Grininger (6 kills, 7 blocks) that made it 9-7. Grininger got the 14th point and Evan Yoshimoto finished off the match with his 21st kill.
Andrew Hammer had 14 kills for the Lasers (0-2), who committed 35 hitting errors.
The Vaqueros closed the third set on a 6-3 run to win 25-22. They led 22-17 in the fourth before Irvine scored three straight. SBCC earned the win on kills by Hogan and Grininger.
The Vaqueros host Orange Coast in their home opener on Friday at 6 p.m.
