Vanguard’s sharp-shooting duo of Preston wynne and Chris Gorman combined to make 11 of 14 3-pointers to lead the ninth-ranked Lions to an 80-58 basketball win in a GSAC game in Costa Mesa on Tuesday night.
“Gorman may be as good as anyone in the league, and Wynne may be as good of a shooter as there is in our league,” said Westmont head coach John Moore. “They each played very well tonight. Their play got Vanguard on a roll.”
Wynne scored 22 points, grabbed nine rebounds and had three assists, while Gorman added 17 points and nine assists.
The contest proved to be an extremely physical and scrappy event from the get-go, as seven team fouls were called before four full minutes had elapsed on the game clock. The Warriors found themselves in the bonus with 15:53 remaining in the first half.
But Westmont struggled at the foul line, sinking only 10-of-21 attempts. The Lions were more efficient, making 12 of 18.
Mantas Drungys scored 14 points to lead Westmont, while C.J. Miller added 12.
Vanguard went on a 14-2 run to open up a 27-15 lead in the first half.
Westmont pulled to within five (52-47) in the second half. But Wynne responded to the Warrior run with another big 3-pointer. After two free throws by teammate DeAngelo Jones (12 points, 4 rebounds, 6 assists), the deficit was expanded back to 10.
“We had a chance to steal the game when our guys cut it to a five-point deficit, but unfortunately we turned the ball over and didn’t get the shots we wanted,” said Moore.
