A slow start ended up costing Carpinteria’s girls soccer team a chance at their first win in the Tri-Valley League on Friday.
Santa Paula scored two early goals and held off the Warriors, 2-1.
“Again, we improved dramatically after losing to them 6-1 a few weeks ago,” Carpinteria coach Charles Bryant said. “But in this game we gave up two fairly early goals and were just on our heels for the first 20 minutes. We stepped up our play for the remainder of the first half and had better touches and ball possession.”
The Warriors were a different team in the second half and created a lot of scoring chances.
“We played 110 percent better in every way,” Bryant said. “Our goal scoring chances started to come more and more frequently and I really thought if we got one back early enough in the second half we could pull it off.”
“Kelsie Bryant headed home a perfect corner kick by Alexa Benitez about half way through the second half to make the score 2-1. The momentum had definitely switched in our favor. We were now playing with much greater urgency and although the game was not that fluid on our part, we were controlling every aspect of it. Unfortunately, time ran out on us but I was so impressed with our efforts.”
Carpinteria is now 6-12-2 overall and 0-10-1 in the Tri Valley League.
