GLF: Scher leads Gauchos at Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate

PALM DESERT, Calif. – Glen Scher shot a 2-under par 214 to finish in a tie for 25th-place in a field of 123 golfers, helping UC Santa Barbara to a 14th-place finish at the prestigious Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate in Palm Desert on Sunday.

Scher entered the final round of the tournament at 5-under par, but he struggled with a +3 75 in the final round and settled for a 214. Jordan Epstein was 3-under after Saturday’s second round, but he shot a 77 on Sunday and finished at +2, 218, which tied him for 52nd.

Derek Trofimczuk shot even-par in round one and then had a pair of 2-over rounds to finish tied for 54th at 4-over par 220. Hunter Robinson (11-over par, 227) and Amol Mahal (17-over par 233) rounded out the UCSB effort.

The Gauchos finished five-shots back of the University of San Francisco, which shot 872, and six back of Texas Tech which finished at 871.

Oregon won the team competition. The Ducks led after the second round and then cruised to victory over Colorado. Oregon finished at 27-under par to the Buffaloes 24-under par. The next closest schools were Idaho and TCU which were both 15-under par.

The individual title was won by TCU’s Julien Brun who carded a 13-under par 203, five shots better than Oregon’s Sulman Razal who finished at 8-under par 208, and six shots better tha Idaho’s Ryan Porch and Oregon’s Ryann Ree, who each recorded a 7-under par 209.

UCSB returns to action on Monday, Mar. 3 when it travels to The Del Walker Invitational, hosted by Long Beach State at The Virginia Country Club in Long Beach, Calif. The tourney will run for two days.
