Bishop Diego’s girls basketball team lost a key Frontier League game on Saturday, falling to La Reina 42-38.
Both teams are in the hunt for a league championship. With one game to play in the regular season, the Regents (9-2) have a one-game lead on the Cardinals (8-3). Santa Paula (9-1) is in first place with two games remaining.
The game was tied 37-37 late in the fourth quarter when La Reina knocked down a 3-pointer to take the lead for good. Down 40-38 in the final minute, Bishop Diego had a chance to send the game to overtime but couldn’t score on its final possession. La Reina converted two free throws at the end.
Jordyn Lilly led the Cardinals with 17 points and Hannah Rogers recorded nine.
Bishop Diego (15-8, 8-3) finishes its regular season on Thursday at Fillmore.
