With a 7-2 victory in the first game of a doubleheader against Menlo and a 7-1 win in the second, Westmont Baseball (11-9) completed a three-game sweep of the Oaks from Menlo College (7-5).
In the opening game, Russell Harmening gave up just one unearned run on five hits in five innings of work to secure the victory. Harmening struck on six and walked three. Devin Matson pitched a scoreless seventh, eighth and ninth inning to earn a save. Matson allowed just two hits.
Shortstop Joey Gonzales tripled to left field in the first inning and went two for four at the plate. First baseman David Gabel tripled to left center in the third inning as part of a two-for-three performance. Designated hitter Alex Bush completed a Warrior trifecta of triples in the sixth inning when he went down the right field line to drive in Will Barring for the Warriors’ fourth run of the game. Bush went two for four.
Bush took over duties on the mound in the second game, and earned his first win of the season. He pitched five and two-thirds innings giving up one run on two hits. He struck out four and walked three.
Left fielder Steven Pollex went three for three at the plate while producing a two-RBI single in the second and an RBI double in the sixth. Bush reached on all three of his plate appearances as the pitcher with a walk, a single and a double. Third baseman Brandon Gildea led off the fifth inning by blasting a solo home run over the left field fence. He added a RBI single in the sixth to go two for four with two RBIs and a run scored. Second baseman Brent Fukushima scored twice after producing two singles in three at bats.
Westmont returns to Golden State Athletic Conference play next week when they host Arizona Christian in a three-game series beginning on Friday.
