SBCC gave up a solo homer in the eighth inning on Saturday in Monterey Park and East L.A. went on to hand the Vaqueros a 2-1 baseball loss. It was the first setback of the year for the Vaqueros (10-1) and ended the best start in school history.
Santa Barbara entered as the state leader in runs (96), RBIs (81) and walks (64). The Vaqueros were third in stolen bases (30) and fourth in batting average (.320). They had scored seven or more runs in all 10 games.
East L.A.’s starter pitched a no-hitter for seven innings. The Huskies (7-4) took a 1-0 lead in the third and the Vaqueros tied it in the eighth when Matt Henderson walked, went to second on Ryan Crowe’s sacrifice bunt and scored on a single by Spencer Erdman.
The Vaqueros, who beat East L.A. 11-6 on Thursday at home, had just one hit in the nonconference game.
SBCC will play El Camino in the next two games, starting Tuesday in Torrance at 2 p.m.
