CBB: Two wins keeps Vaqueros remain unbeaten

Ryan Massengale got a win in his first collegiate pitching start in Saturday’s opener and the SBCC baseball team overcame an early 7-4 deficit to win the second game 10-8 and remain unbeaten.

Massengale, a 6-7 sophomore left-hander, allowed just one run on six hits in 6 2/3 innings and the Vaqueros took the opener, 7-1. Left fielder Connor McManigal had two hits and two RBIs for Santa Barbara (6-0), which has scored seven or more runs in all six victories.

“We got two good wins against a solid team from the Orange Empire Conference,” said third-year coach Jeff Walker. “We played well against the game.”

The Gauchos (3-3) scored six in the second inning of the nightcap and led 7-4 after two innings. Brett Sesma went 3-for-5 and drove in a run in the fifth. Brandon Evans added an RBI single that cut the deficit to 7-6.

Saddleback got a run in the sixth before the Vaqueros put a four-spot up in the eighth. McManigal was also 3-5 and his two-run triple in the top of the eighth put the Vaqueros ahead to stay at 9-8. Patrick O’Brien’s groundout brought in McManigal with the final run.

Noah Villegas pitched 3 1/3 innings of one-run, three-hit ball to earn the victory.

SBCC takes on West L.A. on Tuesday at 2 p.m. The game has been moved to El Camino College in Torrance.
