Santa Ana snapped a 1-1 tie with a run in the fifth on Tuesday, then added four more in the sixth to spoil SBCC’s softball season opener, 6-2.
The visiting Vaqueros committed four errors in the nonconference game at Santa Ana. Celeste Acosta, who pitched a five-hitter, doubled and scored in the third to tie the game at 1-1.
Brianna Portese went 2-3 with a double for the Vaqueros.
“We set the tone early with a lot of hard-hit balls but they were making plays,” said coach Paula Congleton. “Then the wheels fell off in the sixth.”
The Dons went ahead 2-1 in the fifth after Alyssa Yglesias reached on an error and Paolena Comouche scored from second base. The Vaqueros tied it again at 2 on Brianna Gill’s RBI single in the sixth.
Santa Ana scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth on two hits and an error that brought in three runs.
SBCC travels to Bakersfield on Thursday, Feb. 6 for a 3:30 p.m. game.
