Carpinteria’s girls soccer team went into the Lion’s den at Oaks Christian and was mauled 8-0 in a Tri-Valley League match on Monday.
Oaks Christian is a perennial CIF power in girls soccer, winning seven CIF-SS titles in its history. This year’s team has several Division 1 recruits.
“It was a tough loss in many ways but I was impressed with our girls attitude at the end of the match,” Carpinteria coach Charles Bryant said. “We worked extremely hard tonight and I am very pleased with our effort but I think Oaks Christian could beat quite a few college teams. The level is that different.”
Despite the eight goals, Bryant said goalkeeper Karina Hernandez made many spectacular saves, came off her line well and was solid against the Lions.
He also praised the play of Megan Durflinger, Kelsie Bryant and Alexa Benitez.
Carpinteria (6-8-1, 0-6) begins the second round of league play on Wednesday at home against La Reina.
