Kaitlyn Saperstein drilled a free kick for goal, but San Marcos couldn’t hold the lead for the last 12 minutes and finished in a 1-1 draw with Ventura in a Channel League girls soccer match on Tuesday.
It was the fifth tie of the season for the Royals, who are 5-3-5 overall and 0-1-2 in league.
“We make very few mistakes but when we make mistakes, it usually costs us a goal,” said San Marcos coach Macie Berlin.
The Royals dominated play in the first half but left the field at halftime in a scoreless draw.
“We really showcased in the first half of what we’re capable of in the Channel League,” Berlin said. “But we’re still struggling to put the ball in the net.”
Saperstein didn’t have any trouble on her free kick from 20 yards. She got the opportunity after Libby Brymer drove the ball down field and was fouled.
Ventura pressured to get the equalizer. The Cougars created an excellent chance but were denied by a terrific save from goalkeeper Hannah Harrah. They would get the tying goal moments later.
San Marcos plays a non-league game Friday before taking on Santa Barbara on a Super Soccer Saturday at Peabody Stadium. The boys and girls JV and varsity teams will all play their matches that day. The varsity girls cap the day at 5 p.m.
