Freshman Kiara Pickett set up a goal and scored one, leading Dos Pueblos to a 2-0 win over Ventura in a Channel League girls soccer match on Tuesday.
It was DP’s first league win. The Chargers are 12-3-4 overall and 1-2-1 in league play.
Pickett found Stephanie Romero in the box and Romero converted from six yards in the 28th minute.
Pickett scored in the 60th minute, capitalizing on defensive breakdown by Ventura. She was able to stab the ball past the onrushing goalkeeper.
Pickett, Shelby Hoffman and Malia Morales controlled the midfield for DP, allowing Ventura little time with the ball.
The Cougars stepped up their play in the closing minutes, but the defensive work of senior Emma Trumbull was able to help her team preserve the shutout.
“The girls worked very hard tonight and were able to shut down Ventura in most areas of the field,” DP coach Hugh Hollis said. “It was good to see the players win their individual battles against their opposite number. It was a good all-around team effort tonight.”
