Laguna Blanca completed its girls soccer non-league schedule with a 2-0 win at Villanova Prep on Thursday.
Phoebe Madsen scored in the first half off an assist from her older sister, Clara. And Clara Madsen tallied the second goal on a penalty kick after Bryn Jewett was fouled in the box during a scramble late in the second half.
Morgan Gainey made a big save in the second half and Olivia Avery came up with a clutch defensive play to keep the Wildcats off the scoreboard. Gainey deflected a low shot away from the goal. The ball was headed toward an onrushing Villanova attacker, but Avery was able to reach the ball first and tap it to safety.
Avery was playing in her first game after an extended injury, Laguna coach Kevin Shertzer noted.
“It was a great game to wrap up our play before league begins,” Shertzer said. “Scoring goals is always nice, but it was also great to get a clean sheet, seeing Mitsi Gamble and Morgan Gainey split time in goal.”
The Owls (2-3-1) play host to Thacher in a Condor League match on Wednesday.
