Jackie Lopez scored in the 70th minute to give Santa Barbara High a 1-1 tie with visiting Ventura in a Channel League girls soccer match on Thursday.
Down 1-0, Lopez broke in on a ball from Kylie Schmidt and tucked it away for the tying goal. The Dons had two corner kicks in the last five minutes but they couldn’t come up with a game-winning goal.
“We played quick on and got nothing out of it as we made poor decisions with our execution on each of the playsm, which cost us,” Santa Barbara coach Jeff Johnson said. “I felt we were going to steal the game.”
Ventura capitalized on some miscommunication in the back by Santa Barbara and scored the first goal in the 16th minute.
The Dons created several good scoring opportunities in the first half but were unable to finish them. In the second half, hey hit the post twice and were denied in a 1 v. 1 situation with the goalkeeper.
“It didn’t look like we were going to get anything out of the game,” Johnson said.
Then Lopez came through.
Santa Barbara is now 6-3-5 overall and 1-0-1 in league.
