Laguna Blanca and Cate battled to a 2-2 draw in a Condor League girls soccer match on Wednesday.
Laguna pressured early but Cate got the first goal in the 20th minute. Charlotte Monke crossed to Ellen Lempres for the goal. The Rams scored again 10 minutes later on a Cydney Pierce shot that hit the crossbar and bounced in. There was some confusion for a moment as play continued, but the referee indicated a goal.
Laguna (2-4-2) made a late rush and scored two goals in the final three minutes. With three minutes remaining, Bryn Jewett played a ball wide to Clara Madsen and she cut in and placed a shot on goal that the Cate goalie mishandled and ball and it trickled in.
The Owls struck again a minute later. Clara Madsen got the ball in the box but was unable to turn for a shot. She smartly laid it back to Maddie Bonser who buried a shot in the back of the net to tie the score at 2-2.
The last two minutes of the game were frantic as each side pushed to get the winner.
“It was the kind of ending where if we had scored earlier, we might have been able to take all three points,” Laguna coach Kevin Shertzer said. “But hats off to a solid Cate defense.”
