A furious rally by Providence’s girls basketball team came up short on Saturday as Villanova was able to hold off the Patriots 33-32.
Providence trailed 22-9 at halftime but played a much stronger second half to get back in the game. The Patriots tied the game at 32-32 with 18 seconds remaining and had a chance to win the game on their final possession.
Villanova made a free throw with eight seconds on the clock to make the difference.
Providence’s leading scorers were Olivia Johnson, with 10 points, Abbey Oppenhuizen with nine, and Ashley O’Brien’s six points.
