Sam Gaasch keyed a big third quarter for Bishop Diego, and the Cardinals hung on to beat Santa Paula, 48-47, in a Frontier League girls basketball game on Tuesday night.
Gaasch scored five points during an 18-point third quarter that erased a 23-18 halftime deficit for Bishop.
Bishop went up by five points only to have Santa Paula tie the score at the end of the third period.
Down the stretch, Bishop held a two-point lead when it committed a foul with 34 seconds left. Santa Paula’s player made the first free throw but she missed the second after Bishop called a timeout.
Bishop was then called for a shot clock violation, giving the ball back to Santa Paula with two seconds remaining. Bishop stole the inbound pass and the buzzer sounded.
“It was a tough win. The third quarter was a big spark,” Bishop coach Jeff Burich said. “The momentum we had going into halftime carried over into the third quarter.”
Jordyn Lilly scored 17 points, grabbed 17 rebounds, had six assists and six steals to pace Bishop (10-5, 3-0). Hannah Rogers scored 12 points and had 10 rebounds and Gaasch tallied nine points.
Bishop plays at Carpinteria on Thursday night.
