Matthew Firestone scored twice for Cate’s boys soccer team on Saturday in a 3-1 non-league win over Fillmore.
Firestone gave the Rams a 1-0 lead in the 33rd minute and his second goal completed the final score in the 64th minute on a free kick from 25-yards out. Firestone’s first score finished off a multiple player combination involving Ryan Borchardt, Shuta Kobayashi and Leighton Brillo-Sonnino.
Kobayashi assisted on Cate’s second goal by feeding Tyler Douglas with a crossing pass that Douglas knocked home early in the second half. It gave Cate a 2-0 lead.
“This was great result for us,” said Cate head coach Peter Mack. “We were so depleted by injuries that we were unable to give many players any rest. And some of our guys saw their first extended game time of the season.”
Borchardt was one of them as the freshman played in his first varsity game and more than held his own according to Mack.
Cate (3-2-1) hosts Santa Maria on Wednesday.
