Santa Barbara High shook off the rust from a 12-day layoff and blanked Buena 2-0 in a Channel League boys soccer match on Tuesday night,
The victory improved the Dons’ records to 14-4-1 overall and 3-0 in league. They are ranked seventh in the latest CIF-SS Division 1 poll.
“We were pretty rusty in the first half,” Santa Barbara coach Todd Heil said. “In the second half we were better. We did a better job at connecting,”
Brandon Sanchez scored the first goal in the 17th minute. He pounced on a misjudged ball by the Buena centerback, dribbled behind the defenders and beat the goalkeeper 1 v 1.
Erick De La Luz tallied the second goal in the 62nd minute. He jumped on a loose ball inside the 18-yard box and buried his shot.
“He always seems to be in the right spot at the right time,” Heil said of De La Luz.
