Julio Rubio scored two goals, and Dos Pueblos staved off a spirited Santa Ynez squad, 3-1, in a non-league boys soccer match on Thursday.
Rubio gave the Chargers a 2-0 lead in the first half and he completed the scoring in the 72nd minute on a penalty kick.
A corner kick from sophomore Jessie Jimenez set up the first goal. Lalo Arce made a dummy run at the near post and Pedro Torres collected the ball and finished at the back post in the 28th minute.
The Chargers’ second goal came after a long punt from DP goalkeeper Drew Richard. Michael Penza banged bodies with Santa Ynez defenders to win the ball beyond the midline and Rubio picked it up and beat the Santa Ynez goalkeeper 1 v 1.
“He made it look easy beating him and finishing to the back of the net,” said DP coach Matt York.
Santa Ynez got back in the game with a goal in the second half. It came off a free kick that ricocheted off the DP wall.
The intensity of the match picked up and, with about 8 minutes left, Rubio got knocked down in the penalty box and the referee awarded a penalty kick to the Chargers (13-3-1).
York cited the play of Jimenez. “He controlled the middle, set up our intitial goal and played with a physicality that we haven’t seen very often from him,” said the coach.
DP returns to Channel League on Tuesday with a match at Ventura.
