Cate earned a positive result on Wednesday, playing undefeated Santa Maria to a scoreless draw in a non-league boys soccer match.
“If there’s such a thing as an exciting 0-0 game, then this was it,” said Cate coach Peter Mack.
Santa Maria is ranked fourth in CIF-SS Division 3 and came into the game having scored 47 goals in 11 matches.
Cate’s defense was up to the task
“We played a very well organized defense and pressured in the midfield to limit the number of chances for Santa Maria,” said Mack.
Cate keeper Keller Mochel played a solid game and maintained control of the penalty area.
The Rams had several opportunities to score in the second half, including one with time winding down, but the Saints keeper made a good save and held the ball, said Mack.
“I am really proud of our guys,” he said. “Our injuries keep mounting and we just keep rising to the challenge. It’s a tribute to the mentality and work ethic of this team. One look at the faces of our players at the end of the game made it clear that they were disappointed with the result. They’ve set a high standard for themselves and each other. We’re getting great leadership from captains Matthew Firestone and Leighton Brillo-Sonnino and superb play from front to back by every guy who takes the field.”
Cate is 3-2-2 and plays Friday night at Santa Ynez.
