Goalkeeper Jose Angeles made a huge save in the second overtime period, and Carpinteria opened defense of its Tri-Valley League boys soccer title with a 1-1 tie at Fillmore on Friday.
Carpinteria fought back from a 1-0 deficit on a well-executed play late in regulation time. Victor Saldana sent a ball across from the right side, with Benjie Garcia and Francisco Arroyo making runs toward the goal. Garcia let the ball roll through to Arroyo, who ripped a shot past the Fillmore goalkeeper in the 74th minute.
Saldana had a good look at a game-winning goal in the second five-minute overtime but the ball sailed high. Angeles preserved the tie.
“If not for Angeles’ acrobatic save, we would be 0-1 in league with no points,” Carpinteria coach Leo Quintero said. “Instead we played hard, stayed positive and came away with a tie and our first point in league.
Carpinteria (4-4-1, 0-0-1) is home on Wednesday against Malibu.
